Happy Democrats, riding in the new parade float participate in the Juneteenth parade held Saturday, June 20th.  Barbara Nichols and Dock Jackson greet celebrating citizens lining Main Street.

Thanks to Dale Slaughter for donation of the use of the trailer and to all the Democrats who worked to prepare the float for this important parade, especially Linda Laughinghouse, chair of the float committee.  Special thanks to Don Hyde for the photos!

Democratic Club Disbands

Clara Maynard, President of the Bastrop County Democratic Club, would like to announce that by large majority vote on June 4th, the club has decided to disband. Mrs. Maynard's statement follows:

"For more than thirty years, the Bastrop County Democratic Club has led the way in keeping Democratic ideals and candidates in clear public view.  We have worked to make sure candidates of high caliber are elected to represent these Democratic values.

"For much of that time, the Bastrop County Democratic Party was active only during State and National elections.  However, for almost three years now, the party, under the skilled direction of the County Chair, Mitzi VanSant, has established new dynamic capability, meeting the demands of a county party organization, with outstanding results.  Thus we felt it timely and appropriate to unify under the party emblem.

"Those of us who have worked on parades, booths, GOTV efforts and fund-raisers will continue to do so through the Party, requiring one less meeting per month.   The primary functions of the club will be incorporated into the Special Events Sub-Committee of the Party Events Committee.  Linda Laughinghouse was elected chair of that sub-committee.

"Our first projects as the new sub-committee were the Juneteenth Parade in Bastrop on June 20th a rousing success showing off our new float and the Western Days Parade in Elgin on Saturday June 27th.  There will also be a McDade Watermelon Parade in July (date TBA) and the Homecoming Parade in Bastrop on August 8th.  Others will follow those.  We will continue to count on the support all of you have given the club.  Those of us who have been passionate about the club know that the club members hard work led to the current success of the Party.

"I feel that this transition is a good one.  We will continue our work as well as support all the party efforts as a united organization,"  Mrs. Maynard concluded.

Democratic work did not end with the 2008 election of Barack Obama and Chris Duggan, among others.  We have a very important opportunity next year to oust the current Texas governor and possibly take back the Texas House.   But it is only with hard work and determined Democrats that we can make a difference in that effort.  It's a long journey, but Together We Can...

The next party meeting will be held July 9th at Aqua Water Community Room, 415 Old Austin Hwy, behind and east of HEB.  Come and be among the first to welcome the new BCDP County Chair aboard.

County Chair Mitzi VanSant Resigns

Mitzi VanSant, who can be credited with the revival of the Democratic Party Organization in Bastrop County after almost three years of dedication to the difficult effort, has decided to resign as County Chair of the party, effective July 9th.

"I have learned a lot this past two plus years, and our organization has developed and grown quickly in that time.  With the Precinct Chairs, Treasurer and Party Secretary, and of late the Committee Chairs working with me, we have organized for and executed an historic Primary in March of 2008 and General Election in November of that same year. We are already preparing for the next no less important gubernatorial election coming in 2010." said VanSant.

Ms. VanSant indicated that she is resigning to take care of financial demands and her enlarging family, as well as to recover her former personal health regimen.

"I will  continue to support the new County Chair, whomever that might be, and also to organize in Smithville.  I will remain on the Events/Fundraising Committee, and help out where needed.   I will take the interim position of Precinct Chair in my home 2012 precinct, while I train a dynamic young woman named Cassie Hager to assume it..."said VanSant.

Ms. VanSant said that anyone with interest in assuming the work of County Chair is welcomed to contact her for help with understanding the role.

Click here for her contact info.

Activist Barbara Nichols, the acting Precinct Chair of Precinct 3009 and a member of the Steering Committee (Precinct Organizing) has said that she will stand for the position to be filled at the next County Party Executive Meeting to be held July 9th at 7pm.  We have received late notice from Ms. VanSant that former Party Secretary and Club Publicist, Ed Skarnulis. has indicated that he will also stand for the election.  The election voters will include only county party officials, but everyone is welcomed to attend.

With her resignation announcement, VanSant included a wonderful commencement address, given by Paul Hawken at the University of Portland in May.  It is very moving and a must read for all of us.

As Benjamin Franklin was emerging from meetings of the Continental Congress, a woman asked, "Mr. Franklin, what sort of government have you given us?"  "A republic, " he replied, "if you can keep it!"

Your republic needs you right now to stand and deliver support for trust, peace, justice and to save the planet.  Think of the future and work with your open hearts, minds and pocket books to influence political decisions in ways that match your values.  And, do it today and everyday.  It's as important as breathing...

Together We Can

New Program for BCDP

We Democrats are often categorized and misrepresented by folks who just don't know us.  Sometimes those folks are our neighbors, parents of our children's classmates, members of our churches, etc.  We would like to change those misimpressions one at a time.

Our goal with this program is to show our core values, by working hard in Bastrop County’s community volunteer efforts, wearing "Together We Can" (TWC) blue shirts and caps.  While helping our neighbors, we will improve our visibility and demonstrate that Democrats are honorable, contributing members of our community, dedicated to our fellow citizens.

When we wear our TWC shirts and caps to participate in community activities, our neighbors and other county residents will be able to identify us as Democrats, while seeing that we come from every walk of life, as well as every ethnicity and religion. We are fathers, mothers, sons, daughters and grandparents.  And, just like everyone else, we believe in our community.

So come by the office during our office hours to pick up your TWC shirts/caps.  Then look for information about activities or service opportunities, which will be posted on the party website (www.bastropdemocrats.com) at the library and in the local papers. Use this information to get a group of fellow Democrats together.  Wearing the TWC shirts and caps, show up and help out.  These events are a good opportunity to serve the community, while having a great time with our fellow citizens.

Please have a look at the all new 2009 TDP Grassroots Manual formerly known as the TDP Handbook.  This valuable 80-page guide has been rewritten and approved for distribution in time to help us in the work we've got before us these next two years.  We will keep this link on this page permanently, so that you can access it easily for review.

If you decide to print it, please print it front and back to save trees needed to eat up this CO2 that we are producing.

Can you imagine the size of a trillion dollars?

If you began spending a million dollars a day in 1 AD and continued that until now, you could continue spending a million dollars a day for another thousand years, before you would have spent a trillion dollars....

Thanks to Joe Hamm for relaying this tidbit.

Did you know that...

Gallup pollsters have surveyed thousands of citizens around the country and found that in Texas Democrats have a slight lead on Republicans of those surveyed (43.3% to 41%)?  Read poll here We have to get out the vote!!!
